Free Posture Move Model

I have adjusted the Mannequin file in the ARep\Aalborg\FreePostureMove
such that I am only moving the thorac wrt the pelvis (all other
segements are stationary). I am able to move the model in extension,
lateral bending and torsion, however I cannot flex the model.
Everytime I do I am getting the following error at timestep 3/15 fo the
inverse dynamic analysis:

ERROR(OBJ1) : C:\Documents and Settings\lacey\My
Documents\AnyBody\Repository\Repository.6.2.2\Repository.6.2
\ARep\Aalborg\FreePostureMove\FreePostureMove.Main.any
(80) : ‘Study’ : Unhandled exception in Inverse Dynamic Analysis
(Muscle Recruitment); solver was not called

Any suggestions on how to resolve this would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you again,

Hi Lacey,

This is usually related to a numerical error. It may happen sometimes even
if the model is well defined with all the good boundary conditions etc. The
solution is to change slightly the problem. It can be enough just to add one
time step, or change a joint angle of half a degree. Those small changes
will change also some numbers in the equations and eventually the system
will converge again.

Try to change slightly some of those parameters and if it does not do the
trick please write again.

Best regards,

Sylvain, AnyBody Support

I have been working with this model all day. This is what I have found:
Â
I increased the steps from 150 to 200 - error
Â
I removed the thoracic pelvis driver and moved it to L1Seg and Pelvis - same
error
Â
My default settings are:
using the interpolation drivers (as set by AnyBody); angular increases from 0 -
30
I am using the regular BodyModel
Â
If I use the 3 element Hill-type muscle I can get the program to run in flexion
from 0 - 12 degrees, but stops at 12.

I am not sure what is causing this error; I cannot understand the foundation of
it. If you could look into it and see if yours is working I would greatly
appreciate it.

I tried this with the model (FreePostureMove)Â from Repository 6.2 and 7.0

Thank you,
Lacey

Hi Lacey,

I tried to run the FreePostureModel in inverse dynamic and as you said it
did run the whole analysis. What happens is that this model has been design
to run the kinematic analysis only, the aim being to show an example of how
can be driven the body.

So to make it run the inverse some settings need to be adjusted. For
examples I added a small amount of gravity in the others 2 directions and it
is working fine now. If you are modifying the application to create a new
one you would have to adjust some of those settings (small amount of gravity
as I did or recruitment penalty for example). This will depend of the
application you are creating.

Hi Lacey,

Sylvain means that it sometimes helps to add just a tiny bit of gravity to the
directions that are not vertical, for instance like this:

Gravity = {0.0001, -9.81, 0.0001};

The technical explanation is probably that our solvers donøt always like it when
some of the equilibrium equations have the form 0 = 0, and by adding a bit of
fake gravity you avoid this.

Best regards,

John
