Foot model for use with gait analysis

Hi,

My name is Emma Baker and I’m a fourth year Engineering undergraduate
at Oxford University. I am working on a project this year which
involves creating a multi-segment foot model using the AnyBody
software. The model will be based on the Oxford foot model with the
aim to use it to analyse forces in the foot during normal and
abnormal walking. The input motion data will come from gait analysis
using multiple foot markers.

I realise that this will not be a straightforward task, and I am
planning on starting with a simple model and seeing how far I can
get.

Since the aim of the project is to create a suitable foot model for
use with gait analysis I have been looking at adapting the Gait
models in the AnyBody Repository.

Questions:

  1. The initial comments in the GaitUniMiami model say that
GaitApplication2 only works for a limited model with two rigid feet.
Does this mean that I would not be able to use this application if I
want to input data from multiple foot markers into the model?
  2. So does that mean that I should adapt the GaitVaughan model rather
    than the GaitUniMiami model?

I hope that is clear, and that you are able to help.
Any further comments or guidance would also be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Emma

Hi Emma

Welcome to the group, it sounds as an interesting model.

Here are some answers to your questions:

A1: In principle yes, the gaitapplication2 contains a hard-coded replicate
of the leg model in the repository, and this has stiff feet.

A2: No, I think the best solution right now will be to run the
GaitApplication2 on your data, when the model is running you may then
introduce your additional foot segments and drive these manually by your
markers, in the same fashion as in the GaitVaughan model. So your model will
end up being a hybrid of the two the pelvis thigh and shank will be driven
by the gaitapplication whereas the feet will be driven by your markers
manually as in GaitVaughan

As stated in earlier posting on the gaitapplication2, this setup is still to
be considered a temporary solution until all this functionality is build
into the AnyBody modelling system, then the hybrid solution would not be
needed.

Best regards

Søren, AnyBody Support
