Arm Modeling Questions

Hey All,
My name is Kyle Imatani and I am now starting work on a
simple-muscle arm model with the same exact application as the early
tutorials e.g. 2-d single arm/shoulder model where muscles work to
lift a weight. Only I would like to create a more realistic model for
experimental mocap testing,etc.
The problem is that when scanning for a right arm shoulder file(s)
within the AAUHuman/Arm repository, there are many arm files, whose
function/purpose is unclear. Which file/folder should I pick? Note:
the thorax, etc. is unnecessary.

Hello Kyle,

When starting with the arm model from the repository, it will be much easier
for you to look for an example model looking like your case than starting in
the Arm repository. The latter just contains the arm model, but when you
start working with the model and placing it into a context like lifting a
weight you make what we call an Application (= application of the model).

Try looking at the applications in the repository and find one just using
the arm model, if this is what you want.

There models of wheel chair and hand pump powering, gear stick handling, and
wheel turning that might be good starting points.

Have you gone through the tutorials?

The Getting Started tutorials give you basic introduction, also to the idea
of the model repository.

Best regards,

Michael

Michael,
Thanks for the very timely response, I ultimately solved my problem.
Anyways, yes I have gone through the tutorials, and understand that
finding a similar application is indeed much easier than making one
from the group up.
That beind said, I didnt find one that was really close to my needs
(just a single arm+shoulder joint), so instead I had to browse through
the repository anyways until I found a thorax+rightarm body model,
which ended up working - even though I didn’t need the thorax.
However, for future refrences and models, how do i sort/decipher the
many types of only-arm models listed in the repository?

Hello Kyle,

Sorry that I misinterpreted your user skills;-)

About the shoulder-arm model, I believe it is most typical to include the
thorax model. The muscles in the arm in such complicated 3D model are
attaching to so many places in the thorax model that the two model parts are
too hard to split apart compared to the possible gain. The simple 2D arm is
much simpler in that sense, but that concept is way too limited to use for
real modeling.

I think you probably have found the best starting points already. I am sorry
it is not more clear than this currently.

About your question:

I do not know of a systematic approach to finding models/application with
certain features. I guess it may come as the number of models becomes
larger. We write a little bit of description when you look at the demo files
installed together with AnyBody, but these may not come from the newest
version of the repository, since the repository has “its own life”.

You find the demos in the AnyBody Assistant dialog for instance from the
Help > Demo. menu
